Partial dentures are removable devices designed to replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike full dentures, partial dentures are used when some of the patient’s teeth are still healthy and strong. In addition to restoring an individual’s natural smile, partial dentures will improve natural appearance, speech clarity, and the ability to eat more efficiently. In most cases, removable partial dentures feature replacement teeth that are then attached to pink or gum-colored bases. A perfectionist, Dr. Naik will design a partial denture that is customized to your needs. This is done in order to ensure proper fit and comfort. By taking the time to personalize each and every partial denture, our Las Colinas dental team is helping to improve our patient’s oral health and overall health, wellness, and happiness.

HOW DO PARTIAL DENTURES WORK?

In some instances, partial dentures will have a metal framework and clasps that are then attached to your teeth. They may also feature connectors that are more natural looking, depending on the patient’s desired end result. Partial dentures are made from a metal and acrylic composition, or in some cases 100 percent out of acrylic. Again, the patient’s needs and oral anatomy will dictate the design of the partial denture and the material used.

Partial dentures made out of a metal and acrylic composition are generally preferred, as they are more structurally sound, thinner, and more hygienic than their acrylic counterparts. However, Dr. Naik may suggest an acrylic partial denture as a transitional or temporary option. WHY DO I NEED PARTIAL DENTURES?

One of the top benefits of partial dentures is that they allow you to grind and chew your food much easier than other options, in turn improving digestion. Furthermore, a partial denture may help limit the movement of your existing teeth, preventing any further damage from occurring. Here is a look at a handful of the additional benefits of partial dentures:

  • They can provide support to cheeks and lips so the face does not sag
  • They will keep you looking young
  • They can help you speak better in the event your speech has changed because of missing teeth
  • They are comfortable and easy to get used to
  • They are a wonderful option if you are missing teeth in either your upper (maxillary) or lower (mandibular) jaws

TYPES OF PARTIAL DENTURES

There are two main types of partial dentures: fixed and removable. Another term for a fixed partial denture is a dental implant bridge. This type of denture is permanently attached to artificial teeth directly into the jaw using a dental crown or underneath the gum tissue with dental implants.

On the other hand, a removable partial denture is often referred to as a removable dental bridge. This may be the best option for you if a gap between two healthy teeth needs to be filled. When this is the case, replacement teeth will be attached to a gum-colored base and the removable partial dentures will be connected by a metal framework to hold them in place.
